Edward's Archetypes by Jessica D.

Today in class we started the movie Edward Scissor Hands and were supposed to look for archetypes and symbolic elements. I couldn't really find much. However, I remembered that darkness itself has a lot of archetypal meaning. It could mean sadness, death, evil or mystery. I also felt a huge connection to that of the book Frankenstein and i felt that both stories have the same over all meaning about the need for love, judgment of others, and the hardships of being an outcast. I can't wait to watch the rest of it to compare it to these elements because I hadn't really noticed them the first time I watched it

  1. When she first announced that we were watching this movie, I thought "oh perfect, another movie to add to my schedule." At he end of the year, following finals and AP tests, teachers inevitably give up and allow us to watch pointless, unrelated films. However, clever Mrs. Elliott has incorporated entertainment and learning with Edward Scissorhands. While watching it, I thought "hey, that's like Frankenstien! Hey thats an archetype!" I was scaring myself because I releaizedi had learned and retained something of value from the school year. Well played Mrs. Elliott, well played.

  2. I agree, it had alot of similarites to Frankenstein, the whole having a creator and mentor. There were alot of archetypes as the movie went on like him making it snow whenever his love thought about him.

  3. Yeah I caught that at the end too, and how the girl felt free and would always catch herself dancing in the snow like a child all over again.

  4. I thought it was kinda sad that he started out in isolation, and at the end he's thrust back into it. At least he can live with the thought that the girl loved him back, and so i guess thats enough food for the happy ending lovers.

  5. Darkness and lightness are archetypes that contribute a great deal to the mood of the movie. The beginning and end of the movie are made up of very dark scenes with hardly any light or color. This adds to Edward's isolation and reveals his loneliness and uneventful lifestyle. In the middle of the movie, scenes are very bright with many happy colors. At this point, Edward is living in town and he is very happy with his new life. He is becoming an independent individual and starts to know what it is like to be loved, have friends, and be part of a family. It is a very great movie and I always enjoy watching it.
