Just out of curiosity, can anyone relate
The Poisonwood Bible to
The Crucible or is it just me? For some reason it reminds me of that book a great deal. Perhaps it's because of its similar mysterious tone and story of religious girls, not too sure. Ideas?
I hadn't thought of this before, but I can see why that thought would come to you. Certainly we will want to watch how religion is used to manipulate and control rather than foster individual spiritual growth. I'll be on the lookout for more parallels now!
ReplyDeleteI most deff see it now that you pointed it out! The story lines are very similiar but yet there are differences as to why each contains the religious points of view.

Now that you say that, I can definitely see the connection. Both books are focus on religion and young women struggling with the society in which they live. I am anxious to continue reading and see what other connections the books may have.

Good call, now I see the connection too. Each novel presents religion as a force that at times can stunt growth, when it's meant to cultivate with good intentions.

after thinking about i do see the connection. i guess i needed a few days to ponder on the idea of how the crucible was connected to the book. good call.

Good point, I can definitely see parallels between the two now. Both have religion as something that is meant to save many but ends up as something that is portrayed as bad by the work in question.

it doesn't remind me of the crucible at all. i feel like they just don't like how their father treats them (with the exception of leah). adah is really secular, orleanna is described by adah as pagan. the only two people really religious are the father and leah.
ReplyDeleteI kinda hope that Poisonwood Bible is NOT like the crucible, because I did not like that book ad all. It annoyed me, and I didn't want to read it. I'm giving this book the benefit of the doubt as it is, knowing that reading is not the highest priority, and/or the most enjoyable thing I would want to do.

I askedmy sister this question, and she said YES I have never read the crucible before, but she has. So, you are correct. She said that the irls are what relate them the most.
