Senioritis Sonnet
While in class, a friend decided to write a sonnet on her senioritis.
“This year has been the hardest of my life
And everyone said junior year was bad…
college apps, hard classes, so much strife.
In addition to the worst grades ever had.
I used to pride myself on work on-time,
And now I’m struggling just to stay afloat.
Like this poem just barely finding rhymes,
I’m bailing water out of this sinking boat.
And teacher, please, I promise that I try,
But in this sea of interviews and ail,
My brain is dying slowly, electrified,
Extend the deadlines please before I fail?
They say this year’s the best year of high school…
But honestly please end ‘fore I fall off my pedestal.”
The sonnet emphasizes how all of us have senioritis and that it will eventually drive us crazy. This year has been full of ups and downs that have left some of us sitting on the edge of our pedestals. The sonnet connects senior year’s struggles to a boat sinking in the sea and how we are trying to stay afloat by bailing water out and trying to stay focus on the things that are important to our future: college applications and passing classes. Senioritis also brings stress and procrastination in school and worrying about getting into our dream colleges.
We all have senioritis, but I guess I will have to wait and see whether or not it makes me fall off my pedestal before I graduate in May.
Truly my life story!

This is quite insightful and relates to all seniors at this point. I would also have to say one of the hardest part about senior year is the new life changing decisions that we have to make and the longing to finish high school already and get started on our future. Hopefully no body sinks, only 11 more weeks of school =)

This was deep. Very deep... I really wish time would go faster before our lack of motivation defeats our hard work from before. I look up to the seniors who are still working hard. :P

Hey, Senioritis is not a correct word, nor is it an appropriate word to be using in your blog. Plus, senioritis does not involve any swelling or irritation. I believe the correct wording should be, "Lazy". That is all I have to say.

That post was spot on. It really exemplifies how seniors not only struggle with "senioritis" but they have to suffer this affliction during the time they take hardest classes. It also was a good poem in general.
ReplyDeleteIt's a good poem. (: It really describes how alot of seniors feel and what they're going through. Yea, sometimes people forget that we still have stress to deal with like college and our future, other than school.

While some may feel that it may not exist I as a senior know how it feels. Just making it to the end of the week seems like a struggle sometimes let alone May. Very good poem as well.

Wow I can truly relate to the sonnet, especially the worst grades part. I'm also just trying to stay afloat!

Very well done. These blogs about senioritis always just reinforce how different everyone's work load is. For a lot of us this truly has been the best year of our lives. -Richard H
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with the poem, only I don't think its the "cause" of all of these issues and stress. I find having to worry about a whole other school in addition to high school makes high school not as important in the scheme of things. It's not senioritis, its a lack of time to accomplish everything.

I loved reading this poem because I, like all seniors I am sure, can relate very closely with it. It seems that now in our last semester of high school my teachers are choosing to burry us in work as if they want us to fail at the last minute because they know we have so much going on that it is becoming more and more difficult to get my school work done. Senioritis is a deadly disease and I am now afraid we are dealing with an epidemic.
ReplyDeleteI love this. I feel like whether you like it or not, senioritis has hit us all, (yeah even you Ivy League people) Its crazy knowing we have less then 2 months left. I personally feel that at the beginning of the school year, my teachers assigned hardly ANY work, and now as the school year comes to an end it just keeps piling up!
